Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday attended the funeral at Nola near Naples of a two-year-old boy who died in a Naples hospital two months after receiving the transplant of a damaged heart in a case that has gripped Italy.
"Domenico has become a son to all of us.
Children are pieces of our hearts, and our hearts are broken by this tragedy," said the Bishop of Nola, Francesco Marino, during his homily at the funeral of little Domenico Caliendo.
The bishop offered words of comfort to Domenico's mother, Patrizia, and to the mother of the little donor: "Even the Italian language cannot give a name to someone who loses a child." Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, also present said: "Today is a time of grief, it's a time to gather around the family.
Then there will be time to establish the facts." Naples prosecutors are investigating on suspicion of medical negligence regarding the way the heart was transported from Bolzano to Naples.
