The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) carried out coordinated searches in the Kurla and Govandi areas of Mumbai on Monday (March 2, 2026), prompted by intelligence regarding the proliferation of extremist content being circulated through digital networks.
The operation began on Monday evening and extended past midnight into the early hours of Tuesday (March 3, 2026). It covered four locations, including three premises in Govandi and one in Kurla, which were subject to thorough inspection, officials said.
The searches were conducted under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), according to a senior officer. “Based on inputs, we identified certain individuals who were suspected to be engaged in activities detrimental to the security of the state,” he said, adding that several other individuals were also being questioned to ascertain the full extent of the network.
Extremist propaganda module
The suspects are believed to have been in touch with handlers based outside the country, according to officials familiar with the investigation. The primary objective of the raids was to disrupt a module suspected of involvement in spreading propaganda for banned organisations.
