Two persons, including a migrant labourer, were murdered as an armed gang apparently under the influence of alcohol or drug unleashed an unprovoked attack on the passers-by on Monday night.

A 6-member armed gang attacked indiscriminately passers-by near Perumpaththu, a hamlet on the Nanguneri – Ervadi Road under the Nanguneri police station limits on Monday night, in which a local and a north Indian migrant labourer died on the spot and five others sustained cut injuries. The identities of the deceased could not be established immediately.

Agitated over the attack, a section of the Perumpaththu villagers blocked the Nanguneri – Ervadi Road demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attack.

“After a gang lobbed petrol bombs recently in Perumpaththu, we demanded stringent action against the attackers, all belonging to a dominant intermediate caste. As the police action got delayed, the fresh round of unprovoked attack has been unleashed on innocents in which two lives have been lost,” the protesting villagers alleged.

However, the police maintained that it was not an attack with caste overtone.
