A 30-year-old man from Assam was allegedly lynched by a group of migrant workers at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district in the early hours of Wednesday on suspicion of theft. The deceased was identified as Nur Hussain, a native of Nagaon. The Perumbavoor police on Wednesday arrested six people, all from Assam, in connection with the incident.
The arrested are Alauddin, 32, Zakir Hussain, 42, Habibuddin, 32, Musammil Haque, 27, Hachen Ali, 37, and Minarul 32.
Police sources said the alleged incident took place around 6 a.m. at the workers’ quarters of a plywood company at Mudickal near Marampilly, where the accused were staying. Hussain, along with three others, allegedly entered the quarters and stole seven mobile phones and ₹73,000 in cash.
The accused reportedly caught Hussain, while his accomplices ran away. He was allegedly restrained in a room and assaulted using sticks and other objects, inflicting grievous injuries that proved fatal. Later, the accused took the injured to a hospital and reported the incident to the police.
The arrests were made by a special team formed by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) K.S. Sudarshan. The team, led by Perumbavoor Assistant Superintendent of Police Hardik Meena, included Perumbavoor Inspector Anil Kumar L.
