A day after hundreds of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) staged a protest against the Vice-Chancellor’s alleged casteist remarks, the Delhi police arrested 14 protesters on Friday morning. The arrested students included JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, vice president Gopika Babu, and joint secretary Danish Ali.They later secured bail on certain conditions, including that they shall be released only after verification of their permanent address. The bail order stated that the students have been “reluctant in disclosing their correct particulars and have not nominated their family members or friends for getting information of their arrest”.According to the union, the students are planning to appeal for modification of the bail conditions on Saturday. “Since all the [arrested] students are originally from outside Delhi, verification itself becomes the process of elongating imprisonment. Many students have also suffered serious injuries,” it stated. On Thursday, following JNUSU’s call for protest, hundreds of students attempted to march to the Ministry of Education, but the police stopped them from leaving the campus.Foremost among their demands was the resignation of the V-C over alleged “casteist” comments made during an interview.According to the police, 51 protesters were detained on Thursday. An FIR was registered under BNS sections pertaining to causing hurt to a public servant, and assault or criminal force used to determine a public servant from discharging their duty. The police said at least 25 personnel were injured as the protest “turned violent”.JNUSU general secretary Sunil circulated messages urging people to contribute to a fund to pay the legal fees of the 14 students.Protests to continueThe Students’ Federation of India has called for a protest on Saturday in solidarity with the 14 students, and students of Ambedkar University Delhi who were suspended last year over an act of “indiscipline”.
