The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Tuesday held a “student referendum” on the removal of Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit over her alleged casteist remarks during a podcast interview last month.
The results will be announced by the union on Wednesday.
JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, who was among 14 students arrested last month following protests against the V-C’s purported remarks, said students participated in the ‘referendum’ in large numbers.
Guidelines issued by the JNUSU had stated that students should produce ID cards at the 16 booths set up for the ‘referendum’ and cast their ballots.
“There are booths outside schools [of the university], and councillors and activists are overseeing the process. We believe that with a heavy mandate, we will show her [the V-C] that students are against casteism and corruption,” Ms. Mishra said.
