‘Silambu’- a Belgian Malinois - which was inducted into the Tiruchi City Police Detective Dog Squad recently.

One-year-and-two month old ‘Silambu’ has been inducted into the Detective Dog Squad of the Tiruchi City Police for detecting narcotic substances. Belonging to the Belgian Malinois breed, ‘Silambu’ underwent six-month training at the Detective Dog Training Centre of the Tamil Nadu State Police in Coimbatore.Prior to being sent for specialised training in Coimbatore, ‘Silambu’ underwent basic training at the Detective Dog Squad at K.K. Nagar here for three months. This is for the first time that the Tiruchi City Police Detective Dog Squad has a Belgian Malinois breed.Police sources said the training for ‘Silambu’ in Coimbatore was a specialised one to enable it to detect narcotic substances, including ganja hidden inside vehicle, building, beneath the ground, and on humans apart from obedience test.Upon completion of training, ‘Silambu’ was inducted into the Detective Dog Squad of the Tiruchi City Police recently. The Dog Squad earlier had ‘Tiger’ - a Labrador Retriever which was in service exclusively to detect narcotic substances. It died after retirement from active service.The Detective Dog Squad has two Doberman breed dogs ‘ Ponni’ and ‘Kaveri’ for detection of crimes.
