The Superintendent of Police A. Myilvaganan on Tuesday inducted a one-year-old female Belgian Malinois, named as ‘Rudra’, into their Detective Dog Squad.
At present, the 1986-built kennel on Old Bangalore Road near the fort houses dogs in the squad. A nine-year-old Labrador, Agni, is the oldest among them. Along with Rita, 3, a Belgian Malinois, Agni takes care of detecting explosives. Their team-mate, Sara, 4, a German Shepherd, is specialised in finding clues at crime scenes.
Another member, Dora, a two-year-old female labrador in the squad, was also trained at Madras City Police Dog Squad, the oldest dog squad in the country. New entrant Rudra was trained to detect mainly drugs and other narcotics.
At the kennel, each dog is fed with rice, beef, boiled egg, milk, and vegetables every day. Daily training on explosives, crime, narcotics, and earthquakes was given. Each dog is taken care of by two handlers including sub-inspector, M. Gerard Wilson, and head constable M. Sasikumar.
