At least six courts in West Bengal, including two in Kolkata, were cleared out and checked on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) after bomb threats were reportedly received over email.
The emails had reportedly claimed that bombs were planted inside the six courts. Some places also received bomb threat phone calls from unverified and unidentified callers.
This comes a day after many judges from across multiple courts of the State were shifted to conduct the last leg of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work of the electoral rolls. With a lack of judges, courts were already in a state of chaos; the bomb threats on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) added to the woes.
This also comes hours after the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that judicial officers from Jharkhand and Odisha be deployed for the last leg of the SIR process along with the 250 judges already deployed from West Bengal.
After the bomb scare, the bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs were sent to the City Civil and Sessions Court and the Bankshall Court in Kolkata to verify the claims over the threat email. The searches yielded no results.
