SEOUL, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un concluded the ruling Workers' Party's Ninth Congress with a pledge to strengthen the country's economy, as his sister Kim Yo Jong was promoted to a higher party role in a leadership reshuffle announced at the gathering, state media reported Tuesday.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency said that Kim Yo Jong was named an alternate member of the Political Bureau of the Workers' Party Central Committee and was listed among newly appointed department directors, elevating her formal status within the party hierarchy.
She previously served as a vice department director at the committee.
The promotion highlights the continued influence of Kim's younger sister, who has played a prominent role in diplomacy and propaganda in recent years and is widely viewed by analysts as one of the regime's most powerful figures.
