An animal sanctuary and therapeutic retreat centre, ‘The Tranquile’, was formally launched as a “lifelong refuge for rescued animals” in the city on Sunday.
The project is a joint initiative of I-CARE Charitable Trust, founded by animal welfare activist Shiranee Pereira and PFCI Chennai.
Former Indian cricketer and coach Robin Singh, philanthropist Nina Reddy, members of the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board, and representatives of animal welfare organisations, were present at the launch.
The centre is envisaged as a permanent sanctuary for nearly 1,000 animals — including horses, camels, and donkeys — and birds rescued from abuse, abandonment, illegal captivity, and slaughter.
Animals will be housed in open and natural enclosures, designed to allow free movement and social interaction, rather than be confined in cages or chains.
