It was a profound honour to address the role-players and those who gathered at the opening of the Pure Hearts Safehouse in Tongaat on Saturday.

We gathered to open not just a building, but a sanctuary.

The Pure Hearts Safehouse is a testament to what happens when a community refuses to look away. To the people of Tongaat: I say you have demonstrated exceptional initiative. In an era where it is all too easy to retreat behind our own high walls and security gates motivated only by self-interest and the pursuit of conspicuous consumption, you have chosen to step outward, to organise, and to build a refuge for the most vulnerable among us.

To the volunteers who have given their time, sweat, and resources to make this a reality: thank you. Your contribution goes far beyond the physical labour of setting up this facility. You are providing provisional, protective nurturing. You are offering a safe environment to abandoned, abused, and neglected children during the darkest times of their lives. You are the operational definition of Ubuntu.
