Over the past three weeks, if you happened to turn on the news or scroll through your phone, you would likely hear one name over and over again: "Nancy Guthrie."
The abduction of the mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie has captivated the nation as one of the most shocking and bizarre true crime stories of the decade. Nancy, 84 and with limited mobility, was last seen at her southern Arizona home on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the following day. Authorities have said she was taken against her will, and have released piecemeal updates as the case has unfolded, including video of an alleged kidnapper in a ski mask and DNA evidence. Savannah Guthrie, who has been absent from her marquee morning show since the disappearance, has released a slew of heartbreaking videos pleading for her mother's return.
With every passing day, some observers feel as though the case might never be solved. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos continues to hold out hope that Nancy will be found alive, "as long as we have the ability to chase a lead, [the case is] not cold."
There comes a moment in every news story − crime or politics or anything else − when the public and the media move on. There are few if any updates from authorities, and other breaking news — from a deadly avalanche to the arrest of former prince Andrew – fills our feeds.
