Feb. 18 (UPI) -- American Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin crouched down on her skies in relief Wednesday after winning the slalom for her first gold medal since 2018.

Shiffrin, widely regarded as the greatest Alpine skier in history, clocked a 47.13 in her first run to take the lead in the event Wednesday at Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre. Hours later, she posted the second-best time (51.97) of the second runs to clinch her third career Olympic gold medal.

"This is a moment I've been pretty scared of for a long time," Shiffrin told NBC.

Switzerland's Camille Rast placed second, with a 1:40.60, 1.50 seconds behind Shiffrin's 1:39.10. Sweden's Anna Swenn Larsson earned a bronze medal. Americans Paula Moltzan and A.J. Hurt placed eighth and 19th, respectively.
