Feb. 17 (Asia Today) -- South Korea's National Intelligence Service is seeking authority to enter military bases to collect information related to insurrection, treason and rebellion, under a proposed revision to its security-related operating rules.
Officials at the intelligence service and the Defense Ministry said Tuesday that the agency recently issued a legislative notice for a partial amendment to regulations governing responses to national security infringement crimes and related activities. The proposal was drafted after prior consultations with the Defense Ministry and other relevant agencies, they said.
The amendment would require relevant institutions to provide swift cooperation and information sharing to help the intelligence service respond to cases involving insurrection, treason and rebellion.
It would also add a legal basis requiring commanders of the relevant units to promptly cooperate when intelligence service personnel request access to military facilities.
The move could allow access as early as next month, officials said.
