MILAN — The U.S. women's national hockey team's pursuit for its first Olympic gold medal since 2018 is continuing Monday with a semifinal matchup against Sweden at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
Team USA is the heavy favorite to win gold and has gone a perfect 5-0 at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The Americans lead all teams in the tournament in goals (26) and shots on goal (225), while only conceding one goal. However, Sweden has played spoiler to the USA before.
The last time the Olympics were in Italy for the 2006 Torino Games, Sweden defeated USA 3-2 in a semifinal shootout to advance to the gold medal game for the nations' first and only appearance. It also marked the first and only time the U.S. women didn't play in the gold medal match since women's ice hockey made its Olympic debut in 1998.
