Two “stunning” stone altars discovered at a Roman fort near Edinburgh and acquired for the nation are to go on show for the first time in a new exhibition.
The altars were once the centrepiece of the most northerly temple to the god Mithras known of in the Roman empire, and are said to “really bring the beliefs of the Roman frontier to life”.
It is believed the frescoes once decorated at least 20 internal walls of a high-status Roman building between AD 40 and 150.
