A soggy and possibly snowy Valentine's Day weekend is on tap for folks across the South and Northeast, forecasters said, as a large storm system is predicted to spread potentially heavy rain across the region.
"Widespread precipitation is expected to develop and spread quickly into the south-central states Friday [Feb. 13] and Saturday [Feb. 14], reaching the East by Sunday [Feb. 15,]" the National Weather Service predicts in an online forecast discussion from Feb. 10.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski agrees, noting in a Feb. 10 online forecast that "a large storm is brewing for the end of the week and during Valentine's Day weekend in the central and eastern United States."
"Snow and ice are predicted on the storm's northern flank, but one of the biggest concerns is the drenching rain and thunderstorms that will affect the south-central and southeastern U.S.," he added.
The weather service is also concerned, and has placed portions of the region under a "marginal" risk for excessive rainfall, with a focus on Oklahoma and Arkansas.
