Supporters Rally Outside Washington Post To Protest Deep Job CutsSupporters rallied outside the Washington Post’s headquarters Thursday to protest the storied newspaper’s catastrophic job cuts the day before.Rallygoers held signs that read “Don’t gut the newsroom. Save the Post,” and “Democracy Cries in Darkness,” a reference to the newspaper’s official slogan. Another carried an enlarged photo of owner Jeff Bezos’ head with the word “greedy” taped to it.Jon Schleuss, president of the NewsGuild, slammed Bezos for the layoffs.“These layoffs are shameful. The fourth-richest person in the world, Jeff Bezos, owns the Washington Post,” he told the crowd. “He's spending tens of millions of dollars buying a documentary for Melania Trump to curry favor with the president of the United States.”"So many of our colleagues lost their jobs in such an impersonal and strategically indefensible way," said Luke Connors, a Post software engineer and leader of the newspaper’s tech union. “This is not how you treat people with dignity.”Several journalists spared by the layoffs were in the crowd to show solidarity with their former colleagues, with some mentioning the somber state of the newsroom.“It’s like a bomb went off in the newsroom,” said one Washington Post journalist still employed at the newspaper.
