Trump Ally At DOJ Demoted: ReportsEd Martin, one of President Donald Trump's strongest allies in the Justice Department, has been demoted and will no longer oversee investigations into special counsel Jack Smith and other enemies of the president, sources told The Washington Post and NBC News. The right-wing activist, once involved with Trump's "Stop the Steal" movement, had been chairing the department’s Weaponization Working Group, which was running point on reviewing past prosecutions against the president. Martin was previously appointed as interim U.S. Attorney in the nation's capital, but his nomination to fill that role permanently stalled out after he failed to secure enough Republican votes in the Senate. The position ultimately went to another staunch Trump ally, Jeanine Pirro. When reached for comment about the reports, a DOJ spokesperson would only say: “President Trump appointed Ed Martin as pardon attorney, and Ed continues to do a great job in that role."CNN reported separately that Martin is leaving the DOJ all together in the coming weeks.
