A couple of petty crooks, impoverished and largely talentless, decide to try their luck in a poetry contest offering a few gold coins. When they come across a singing peacock, they persuade it to join the competition – intending to pocket the prize money themselves. But when the peacock begins to sing a strange, melancholy song in Yiddish, the two grow uneasy and urge it to liven things up.
