Students used to the greasy and deep-fried delights of their canteens are being encouraged to opt for healthier alternatives through millet kitchens in Tiruchi’s educational institutions.

Based on a recent proposal by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, women’s self-help groups (SHGs) have been at the helm of eateries serving reasonably priced millet-based preparations in various government colleges in the Tiruchi district.

The Sirudhaniya Unavagam millet canteen functioning on the Bharathidasan University campus since December 2025 has become a favourite of its young clientele, says T. Sumathi, a member of the Kumbakudi Panchayat Level Federation SHG team behind it.

“After a few weeks of uncertainty, we have been finally able to earn a monthly profit of ₹15,000. The students are seeking us out for alternatives to fast food. Even our herbal soups are becoming more popular than regular tea and coffee, because they give an instant energy boost. The millet paniyarams, puttu, and spinach chutney recipes are a big hit,” Ms. Sumathi said.

The dishes are priced in the range of ₹60. A similar millet canteen is functioning on BDU’s Khajamalai campus.
