She wanted to share her happiness online. Then, the internet tore her apart for it.

Danielle Walter, a dating influencer with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram and 791,000 followers on TikTok, has been documenting her love life for the public. Her content has consisted of dating debriefs and advice for fellow singles.

But toward the end of 2025, her page took a turn when she shared an update for followers: She's not single anymore. In fact, she got in a relationship with someone not long after meeting him. Walter detailed her love story with her boyfriend, Lucas, in a 21-part series, which went viral, racking up millions of views.

Though Walter appeared overjoyed, commenters weren't as thrilled. "I’m too experienced to see this," one person wrote. "Lots of butterflies and no substance," another wrote. "THIS. DOESN'T. HAPPEN," wrote another. Many also attacked her boyfriend, calling him "clout chasing," "so fake" and a "narcissist." The backlash eventually drove Walter to post another video, saying the 21-part series was, in hindsight, excessive. Walter declined to comment when reached by USA TODAY.

Dating and relationship experts say there's a lot to unpack with the viral Walter situation. They say it spotlights an important conversation around how fast a relationship should move. Furthermore, they say it also speaks to something much bigger than Walter and her relationship: the collective pain so many feel from modern dating, which has made our society more skeptical of other people's apparent happily-ever-afters.
