Leaders across the political spectrum welcomed the Supreme Court’s stay of the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) 2026 equity regulations amidst a controversy over its definition of “caste-based discrimination”, with some calling the decision “appropriate” in light of the social tensions it had created. However, certain student bodies, such as the All India OBC Students Association, and the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Students’ Union opposed the order. Political leaders such as Prakash Ambedkar of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi in Maharashtra, John Brittas of the CPI (M), and Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha also opposed the court ruling.
