Italy has sent Ukraine a first batch of aid to help Kyiv cope with the energy emergency caused by Russian bombing of its infrastructure that has created a humanitarian crisis in several major cities, Premier Giorgia Meloni's office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The aid, featuring electricity generators and industrial boilers, is being given to respect a pledge Meloni made to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a meeting on the sidelines of the European Council in October.

"The first batch of 78 industrial boilers was delivered today, with an additional 300 to be delivered in the coming weeks, for a total thermal capacity of approximately 900 MW," the statement said.

"The boilers are intended for damaged urban networks, hospitals, and essential services.

"This humanitarian initiative by the Italian Government will provide sufficient thermal capacity for approximately 90,000 homes or a city of approximately 250,000 inhabitants.
