In his prison diary, Rafi Marciano, a 75-year-old educator, sheds light on the indignity of life behind bars in Israel
September 1. "A new and unknown chapter is starting in my life. I am going to prison to accept my punishment, and I understand that I have to correct mistakes and pay a price for them. Even a wolf that's caught in a bear trap performs a heroic act to break free – it chews its own leg until it's severed, and continues as a free being without a leg. It's a shame I didn't take my precious family into account. I hurt my loved ones. The day will come when I will make amends to all of them."
