Two persons were arrested on Tuesday from Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad for allegedly attacking a head constable of Delhi Police and snatching his pistol recently, the police said.

According to the police, the two accused – Avinash and Waseem – attacked head constable Rajkumar while he was on patrolling duty at Safdarjung Enclave in south Delhi on January 22. The duo fled the scene after snatching Mr. Rajkumar’s gun, the police said.

An FIR was registered in connection with the incident at the Safdarjung Enclave police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.

Police scanned CCTV footage from areas including Safdarjung Enclave, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, and Mehrauli. “Electronic surveillance later indicated that Avinash had moved towards Tundla in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district. On January 23, police conducted raids in the area, during which his father confirmed that Avinash had stayed there overnight,” the DCP said.

“At around 2.15 p.m. the same day, the accused was spotted riding a scooter. When signalled to stop, he attempted to flee, lost balance and allegedly opened fire at the police team upon being surrounded. During the exchange, ACP Melvyn Varghese and Inspector Ram Kumar were hit on their bulletproof jackets. The accused sustained bullet injuries to his knees in police retaliation carried out in self-defence and was apprehended at the spot,” the officer said.
