Mumbai’s next ‘first citizen’ will be a woman from the open category, holding the mayoral office in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the upcoming term of 2.5 years, stated Maharashtra Urban Development Department (UDD) on Thursday (January 22, 2026), following the reservation lottery process.
This paves way for the political parties to now formally announce their candidates for the mayoral position. The BMC and the other 28 Municipal Corporations (MC) are likely to have a mayor, the city’s top post, in the coming week.

Rotation method
The process was completed using the rotation method. So, if the previous mayor was from an open category, then that category may be excluded, ensuring that the position is reserved for another group.
