Barely 10 days before the newly elected 18th Bihar Assembly’s Budget Session is to be convened, the State Congress party is yet to choose its leader in the House. In the last Assembly election, the results of which were announced on November 14, 2025, the Congress, contesting as part of the Mahagathbandhan, won only six seats in the 243-member Assembly.

All six party MLAs have been summoned to Delhi on Friday (January 23, 2026) and are likely to meet the top party leadership, as the issue could not be resolved at the State level during a meeting on Thursday (January 22, 2026) with State Congress president Rajesh Ram and party State incharge Krishna Allavaru, along with other leaders. The Budget Session of the Assembly is scheduled to begin on February 2, 2026.

In recent days, there was speculation in political circles that all six newly elected Congress MLAs might switch allegiance to the ruling Janata Dal (United), but this was strongly refuted by both JD(U) and State Congress leaders as “speculation”. “I do not know from where such rumours arise but none of our party MLAs are going anywhere...they would remain here in the party,” Mr. Ram told mediapersons.

Meanwhile, party sources told The Hindu that “sustained efforts were made by senior State party leaders to choose one of the six MLAs as legislature party leader but none of them were willing to be chosen as Leader of Legislature Party and that is why the issue has been lingering on for some time”.
