The secret to scoring a cheap flight may be to avoid your usual airport.
When booking their trips, some travelers may automatically think they should fly out of a major airport since there are usually more flight options, but secondary airports that serve metropolitan areas could offer better savings, according to travel platform CheapOair's 2026 trend predictions. Think John Wayne Airport instead of Los Angeles International Airport, or London Gatwick rather than London Heathrow Airport.
Smaller airports typically have lower landing fees and per-passenger taxes, so their flights can sometimes be more affordable, but there are fewer options than at larger airports. As a bonus, you may also encounter fewer crowds and shorter lines at airport security checkpoints.
Score a cheap flight: These destinations drop the most in airfare
"These secondary airports provide more options and can offer lower fares compared to their larger counterparts," Yuvraj Datta, chief supply and revenue officer for CheapOair, told USA TODAY in a statement. "They frequently provide travelers with a more streamlined experience because they are often smaller, less crowded, and easier to navigate. For many travelers, this can mean both cost savings and a more enjoyable journey."
