he decision by European countries to hold a symbolic joint military exercise with Denmark on Greenland's autonomous territory deserves recognition. Time is of the essence to avoid a crisis with still incalculable consequences for both sides of the Atlantic. The meeting in Washington on Wednesday, January 14, between the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers, Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Vivian Motzfeldt, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, ended in what the Danish foreign minister called a "fundamental disagreement."

This tension is the doing of one man alone: Donald Trump. By insisting on capturing the vast island by any means, the US president has shown culpable and condemnable irresponsibility. One can only regret that no one in his circle has the will – or the courage – to say so.
