President Donald Trump is stepping up pressure on Greenland to become part of the United States, saying “anything less than that is unacceptable,” while tying the island nation to missile defense in a social media post on Jan. 14.
“The United States needs Greenland,” Trump wrote.
Trump posted on Truth Social ahead of Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio's meeting with Greenlandic and Danish officials at the White House. Greenland has said it does not want to be part of the United States.
U.S. officials met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt. Neither side changed its position at the meeting. Further talks are scheduled.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is a self-governing country that’s part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and an ally of the United States.
