Attorneys representing the family of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, the mother of three who was killed by an immigration enforcement agent in Minneapolis, say they are launching an investigation into the fatal shooting and intend to take legal action against the federal government.
The legal team, which includes Antonio M. Romanucci, plans to provide rolling updates to public on the "civil investigation" into Good's death on Jan. 7. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross shot Good, 37, on Jan. 7 while she was driving.
"The community is not receiving transparency about this case elsewhere, so our team will provide that to the country," Romanucci's firm said in a statement.
Romanucci was one of the attorneys who represented the family of George Floyd after he was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis in 2020. City leaders approved a $27 million settlement in 2021 to resolve a wrongful death lawsuit brought by Floyd's family.
Romanucci said the litigation team representing Good's family will have to follow a different process than the path used to file a civil lawsuit against a city or state over a police killing like Floyd's. He said in a statement that "legal action against the federal government is even more complex, as it requires victims to navigate the byzantine, time-consuming processes mandated by the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA)."
