The Udupi police arrested two persons from Mangaluru taluk in connection with the theft of copper sheets from the roof of Parashuram Theme Park in Karkala taluk of Udupi district on January 3.
The police identified the accused as Arif alias Munna, 37, from Kalavaru village, and Abdul Hameed, 32, from Kavoor village. They recovered 51 copper sheets valued at ₹45,000, two ceiling fans, an autorickshaw and a motorcycle. A search is under way for the other suspects.
On January 3, thieves broke into a closed building in the theme park and stole copper sheets from the roof. The building had been locked since September 2023. A former guard reported the theft to an official at Udupi District Nirmiti Kendra, who filed a complaint.
Three teams were formed to trace the accused in the theft, leading to V. Sunil Kumar, Karkala MLA, and local Congress leaders trading allegations against each other.
Arif (alias Munna) is accused in over nine criminal cases registered in Padubidri, Udupi town, Brahmavar, Karkala Rural, Mulki and Moodbidri police station limits. Hameed is accused in two criminal cases registered in Bajpe and Moodbidri police stations. Police described the arrested persons as habitual offenders. They attempted to sell stolen copper sheets at a scrap shop, the police said.
