A violent clash broke out between two undertrial prisoners, who were arrested in connection with the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) former State president K. Armstrong. An assistant jailer was injured while attempting to intervene.
According to prison sources, the incident involved Appu, an undertrial prisoner from Pudur and ‘Ponnai’ Balu, the brother of slain rowdy ‘Arcot’ Suresh. Appu attacked Balu inside the prison complex, following which Balu retaliated. During the scuffle, an assistant jailer, Thirunavukkarasu, who stepped in to pacify the inmates, was pushed down and sustained minor injuries.
Officials said the clash was also linked to an ongoing rivalry between them over bail-related issues in the Armstrong murder case. The verbal argument soon escalated into a physical fight, prompting prison guards to step in, separate the two groups, and move them back to their respective cells.
Assistant jailer Thirunavukkarasu was given first aid at the prison hospital. Based on a complaint lodged by prison authorities, the Puzhal police registered a case.
