Amid allegations of inadequate availability of doctors during medical emergencies at the Government General Hospital (GGH), Karaikal, a team of super-speciality doctors from Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH&PGI), Puducherry, has been deputed to the hospital and will begin work on January 2, 2026.

According to an official order issued by the Medical Superintendent of IGGGH&PGI, the team comprises K. Sriram, Chief Medical Officer (SAG) and Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery; P. Jayasri, DNB resident in Neurology; V. Premnath, Senior Resident in Cardiology; and Haridev Kumar, DNB resident in Urology.

The doctors have been instructed to report to the Medical Superintendent of GGH, Karaikal, on the scheduled date and submit details of cases attended and procedures performed during their visit. The hospital administration has been directed to make necessary arrangements in advance, including pre-anaesthetic check-ups for patients scheduled for procedures, to avoid last-minute cancellations.

Meanwhile, civic groups reiterated their demand for the permanent posting of specialist doctors at the hospital.

Speaking to The Hindu, J. Suriya, coordinator, Karaikal People’s Struggle Group, said protests had been held repeatedly over the prolonged absence of specialists. “Whenever we agitate, doctors are deputed temporarily. They come for a week or two and then leave. This has become the norm.”
