Grammy-winner Chappell Roan renounced her tribute to late French film star Brigitte Bardot after learning about her history of homophobic and xenophobic stances.
Following news of Bardot’s death at age 91 on Sunday, the queer pop star took to social media to say, “Rest in peace Ms. Bardot. She was my inspiration for red wine supernova.”
In the beginning of her 2023 track, which the artist described as a “campy gay girl song,” she sings, “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn’t know.”
She was also an ardent supporter of France’s far-right party, the National Front, supporting candidates like Catherine Megret and Marine Le Pen.
Following her time in the film world, she criticized immigration in the European nation, holding particularly vicious opinions about what she described as the “Islamisation” of France, according to The Associated Press.
