Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys released veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs, a league source told UPI on Tuesday.
Diggs will now go into the waiver process and become a free agent if unclaimed. The Cowboys signed the six-year veteran to a five-year, $97 million contract extension in July.
Diggs, 27, joined the Cowboys as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-2 cornerback led the NFL with 11 interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns, over 16 starts in 2021. Diggs, who received All-Pro recognition that season, earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection in 2022.
The veteran defender appeared in six games this season before landing on injured reserve due to a concussion and knee issues. He returned to the Cowboys lineup Dec. 21 and started their last two games.
Pro Football Focus gave Diggs the No. 82 defensive rating among cornerbacks who were in for at least 20% of the maximum snaps played at the position this season. He ranked 61st in coverage. He ranked 93rd overall and 81st in coverage in 2024.
