External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his wife Kyoko on Tuesday offered worship at Sri Iravatheswarar temple at Darasuram in Thanjavur district.

The temple, which is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is situated on the outskirts of Kumbakonam.

ASI officials explained the salient features of the temple architecture to the Minister and his wife.

Mr. Jaishankar and his wife also visited Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram near Ariyalur. They were accorded a warm reception at the entrance by the temple staff.

After worshipping Lord Siva at the sanctum sanctorum, the Minister went around the temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Officials of the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the temple, explained the architectural splendours of the temple.
