About 17 migrant labourers from West Bengal were questioned by the police in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on December 29 after some locals complained and alleged that they were Bangladeshi nationals illegally residing in the city, officers said.

According to the police, a complaint was received at the Malharganj police station from some residents of Kamla Nagar area alleging that a group of workers at a cloth factory were illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

Krishna Lalchandani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Indore Zone 1, told The Hindu that the workers were let go after basic questioning and the police are currently verifying their identity documents.

“Most of the workers have documents from Purba Medinipur district while some are from near Kolkata. We are verifying their documents and nationality. Nobody has been detained,” Mr. Lalchandani said.

The DCP also said that the police will soon contact authorities in West Bengal. “If needed, we will send some officers there too,” he added.
