Export of engineering goods from Tamil Nadu is on the rise despite multiple challenges in the international market.
According to EEPC India data, Tamil Nadu’s share in engineering exports in the financial year that ended on March 31, 2025 was 15.8 % with $18.1 billion exports compared with 2023-2024. Between April and September 2025, Tamil Nadu exported engineering goods worth $13.6 billion as against $ 12.9 billion during the same period in 2024. Tamil Nadu’s share in the total exports is now 20%.
Exporters of engineering goods in Coimbatore say the major driver for the increase in shipments is likely to have come from the automotive sector.
The domestic commercial vehicle sector is doing well for the last four to five months and auto component suppliers in Coimbatore have seen a jump in orders, said K. Ilango, former president of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA). Auto component exporters supply mainly to the after sales market. Though this segment has not seen significant increase in demand, the jump in exports is likely to have come from the major exporters, he said.
The exporters added that engineering exports usually do well during the second and third quarters of the calendar year. The other factors that may have added to the jump in exports may be the increase in export invoicing because of the sharing of tariffs, rupee depreciation, and shipment of orders before the tariffs came into force, they said.
