Several wetland bird species were recorded during the two-day Synchronised Wetland Bird Census that was conducted in various districts in the central region on Saturday and Sunday.
This is a State-wide exercise conducted by the Forest Department involving bird enthusiasts, volunteers, and college students. Nine districts, including Tiruchi, were covered in the central regioni.
The census was undertaken to record bird species and their numbers, assess wetland conditions, and support habitat management besides conservation of resident and migratory birds.
In Tiruchi district, the census was conducted in 20 wetland locations. The locations included Keerambur tank, Thuraiyur big and small tanks, Koothapar big tank, Krishnasamudram tank, Mukkombu Upper Anaicut, and Muthukulam tank.
The census in Tiruchi district recorded a high diversity of resident bird species. Over 80 Forest Department staff and about 100 volunteers participated. The exercise was conducted in 25 wetlands in Pudukottai district; 10 wetlands in Ariyalur district including Karaivetti bird sanctuary and 22 wetlands in Tiruvarur district.
