Emir Abd El-Kader, in 1865 WIKIPEDIA
Emir Abd El-Kader (1808-1883) lived a thousand lives, including forging a national destiny that Algiers has been trying to bring to the big screen since the 1970s. During a meeting on December 8, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune revived the project to produce a feature film on the extraordinary life of the man known as the "greatest enemy of France."
This decision carries strong political symbolism, as relations between Paris and Algiers have entered a period of unprecedented tension since Algeria's independence. The latest episode in this fraught relationship unfolded on December 24, when Algerian lawmakers passed a law criminalizing colonization. France promptly denounced this as an "obviously hostile initiative."
