The renovated library for visitors, students and faculty members at Department of General Medicine of Government Medical College and Hospital in Vellore was inaugurated on Friday as part of the hospital’s initiative to strengthen academic excellence and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Officials said that the library was given a facelift at a cost of ₹2.5 lakh with funds from the local branch of Association of Physicians of India (API). After inaugurating the facility, M. Rohini Devi, dean of the hospital, lauded the initiative as a meaningful investment in the intellectual growth of students, residents, and faculty members. “The library will help to enhance clinical acumen, evidence-based practice, and lifelong learning among medical professionals, apart from catering to visitors,” she said.

It has around 1,500 books in its collection. Most of the books are donated by volunteers to encourage students to spend time in a library. To inculcate the habit of reading in a library, students will be allowed to spend at least an hour at the library. Around 30 visitors can spend their time in the library at a time.

On the occasion, N. Rathi Thilagam, medical superintendent, Gowri Veligandla, vice principal and D. Ravichandran, resident medical officer of the hospital were present.
