Two Bharatiya Janta Party workers were killed in north Bengal’s Mathabanga in the Cooch Behar district on Thursday (December 25, 2025). BJP leaders said this is a targeted political attack. However, local Trinamool Congress leaders have refuted the claims and said the deaths were due to an internal family feud.
The two deceased were identified as Madhab Sarkar, 38 and Jadav Sarkar, 27, Mr. Jadav was the nephew of Mr. Madhab. Six people were injured in the clashes, out of which two sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment in the local hospital.
“Police are trying to say that this was an internal family matter. But both of them were active BJP workers, no matter what the motive, all the people who killed them were known faces of the TMC,” Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said on Thursday evening. He added that Madhab Sarkar was a registered member of the BJP and was a local youth wing leader.
Local TMC leader from Mathabhanga, Girindranath Barman refuted Mr. Adhikari’s claims and said that the clash was between two families and the BJP is trying to politicise the matter.
An FIR has already been registered, and six people have been arrested in connection with the crime. One of the arrested men is a local TMC Booth president, police confirmed.
