Delhi Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena on Thursday formally named an 11-acre Delhi Development Authority (DDA) park as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sadbhavana Udyan, paying tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the occasion of his birth centenary.

The park, developed by DDA, is located along Mahatma Gandhi Marg, parallel to the walled city or Old Delhi, and is the second park in a series of three being redeveloped in the area. The park has been conceptualised under the guidance of the L-G as part of a plan to decongest the lawns at Kartavya Path, DDA mentioned in a press release. It is part of a larger landscape redevelopment project covering three parks along Mahatma Gandhi Marg. The project includes a green belt spread over 35 acres and stretching about 1.7 kilometres along the Ring Road. The first park in the series, Kranti Udyan, was inaugurated in January this year.

A statue of Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be installed at the site in the near future, according to the release.

It features formal lawns, white marble pathways, shaded eating plazas, baradaris, sculptured fountains, open recreational zones and public amenities.

One of the main attractions is a large sculpture showing five white horses guided by a sarathi, symbolising leadership, momentum and progress. A waterbody and fountains surround the sculpture. The park also includes four Yakshini sculptures placed along the linear lawns, created by Padma Vibhushan awardee sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo.
