Protesting workers, who were earlier under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), plan to hold a demonstration near the Madras High Court on December 27 at 11 a.m., demanding job permanency and the reversal of the privatisation of solid waste management by the civic body.
The protest would be organised by the Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam (UUI), affiliated to the Labour Trade Union Centre (LTUC) and the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), according to a press release.
In a related development, four women workers — Periyanayagi, Rita, Nagalakshmi and Lakshmi — under NULM in Royapuram and Thiru.Vi.Ka Nagar Zones entered the fifth day of their hunger strike against privatisation of solid waste management on Thursday, at Ambattur.
