District Collector N. Devidas has given instructions to conduct extensive and stringent inspections across the district to ensure food safety during the Christmas and New Year season.Presiding over a meeting to review the district’s general situation, the Collector on Wednesday directed the Food Safety Department to expand its ongoing enforcement activities.
So far, inspections have been conducted in 236 establishments, resulting in the closure of seven unlicensed shops. Notices were issued to 23 establishments while 15 others were fined. Additionally, 23 samples of items, including cakes and wine, have been sent for laboratory testing.
“Health cards will be made mandatory for cooks and helpers in government schools and anganwadis. Furthermore, food safety awareness classes are being conducted in schools. It was noted that Kollam and Karunagappally railway stations have received FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right Station’ certification after a successful audit. Special training is also being provided to Anganwadi cooks, ration dealers, hotel/restaurant entrepreneurs, and traders,” said the Collector.
During the meeting, the Collector released the promotional board for ‘Arogya Thallika,’ an awareness programme launched by Food Safety department to promote balanced dietary habits to combat lifestyle diseases.
