The virulent wave of flu cases that has hit Italy is getting worse, according to new data from the Higher Health Institute's RespiVirNet surveillance system.
It said more than 816,000 acute-respiratory-syndrome cases were registered over the last week, nearly 100,000 more than the previous week.
It said over 40% of the infections are attributable to influenza viruses, and more than half of these were the new K strain of the now-dominant A/H3N2 virus.
Sardinia and Campania are being hit especially hard, the ISS said.
