Greg Biffle, retired NASCAR star, and his family were killed in a plane crash Thursday morning in North Carolina.
NASCAR said in a statement that they are “devastated” by the deaths of Biffle and his family, as well as Craig Wadsworth and Dennis and Jack Dutton.
“Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many,” NASCAR said in a statement. “His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport.”
The footage below was shared on social media, and it shows smoke billowing from the airport in the aftermath of the crash.
A joint statement from the families of the victims called Biffle and his wife “devoted parents and active philanthropists.”
